The Rotary Club of Moruya says thank you
The Rotary Club of Moruya has had staggering support from the community over the summer holidays according to President Rohan Gleeson.
Mr Gleeson said the community should feel very proud of their achievements and the support given to enable the Rotary Club of Moruya to provide seven ShelterBox kits since July last year.
Since 2001, Rotary's ShelterBox programme has provided shelter, warmth and dignity following more than 80 disasters in over 50 countries, thereby assisting more than 800,000 people. The current crisis in Haiti has seen an unprecedented roll out of the green boxes to form hospitals as well as providing shelter and the basic necessities of life for some 30,000 people. As well as the substantial tent, each $1200 box contains tools, water purification equipment, bedding, cooking and eating utensils for up to ten people.
It has been a very busy January which started with catering for the Narooma Cup and was followed later in the month by the Moruya Cup. Both events are major money raisers for the Club and I sincerely thank all members that we involved with the catering effort.
At Moruya Cup we had a major presentation that was manned all day by Rotarians explaining to the public the purpose of the Shelter Box program and accepting donations. It was a most worthwhile exercise and certainly raised awareness for Shelter Box and we collected much needed funds to go towards the next Shelter Box kit.
It is Youth Exchange time with students coming and going to all corners of the Globe. Pauline & I were lucky enough to have Tom Pavlou and Nitida Atkinson together for lunch during the week.
It is the
time of year for family but alas it is not necessarily all joy throughout our community. We especially think of those with sickness issues at this time of the year and our Club has tried to put some joy back into the homes of 8 recipients of Christmas hampers which were created and distributed this last week. To Col, Bon, Pauline, Bill and a host of members behind the scenes I thank you one and all for your kindness and hard work in the preparation of this most worthwhile project.
At our Christmas party on Wednesday 16th we finally handed over the keys to the 4 wheel scooter to Eurobodalla Nursing Service, a much needed mobility aid in our community that will be very prominent on our streets in its Moruya Rotary insignia. .
It has been a fabulous start to
the new year and I would like to thank all members for the contributions. We have had many outstanding contributions and I do not want to single out any particular members but Foundation Director John Gillett has been running both Foundation and Youth in the absence of Malcolm. I am sure John enjoys it but it has been a big load with not one but three teams being organised for MUNA, the successful application, interview and acceptance of Marymajella Dubbelaar to the (National Youth Science Forum) NYSF. This along with applications for Seimens and keeping a watchful eye on the early progress of our inbound exchange student Hedvig has kept John very busy.
Hedvig arrived 16th July and this young lady has quickly settled into life in Moruya.
Fellows,
Welcome to the Moruya
Rotary
Club's web site and yes for the record, we are the first in the District
to complete this task.
As some of you are aware our son Philip is the District 9710 web master via his business Unique Intention which has been in operation for nearly 4 years. It can boast some pretty impressive names as part of its client base like The National Press Club of Australia. Unique Intention contracts to some major players in the graphical interface market such as Zanebono. Current DG Phil Mewitt contracted Phil for the District Web site ( www.rotaryd9710.org.au ) in early 2008 after the most successful completion of the District Youth Exchange site found at www.rotaryexchange.org.au
